Northstar:
There's a price trail going in the 'romex' thread, not much said for MC.

I posted $16+ foot for 600Kcmil THHN Cu last week. That was the $$ I was quoted Thurs/Fri last week.

All projects that I bid I let them know the the prices are subject to change daily, depending on the price of wire. I bid a large job a few months ago, and now they are ready to start. When the contractor called me, I told him that the price would be adjusted. Since he is a professional, he understood, and asked me to give an estimate for the extra cost, so he could pass this information to the customer.

I was quoted $0.69/ft for #8 AWG yesterday, and found a 500' roll of it at a box store for $134. Needless to say, I bought it...

As far as bidding the job, I'd simply include a caveat / disclaimer about "due to the fluctuations in the copper and steel commodity markets, these prices are effective the date of bid only..."

Prices on copper tube and brass pipe have also been going through the roof. I heard that part of the reason is because of miner strikes in South America.

On my work (resi only), I amend the bid w/ a wire surcharge line saying rates were determined 01-01-06.Difference between wire prices then and now is the surcharge. Tracking how much wire used is the trick. I use some rough estimates for examples. Customers can check out the copper problem and I encourage them to do so.

I mainly work T&M now and do very few quotes, but I do have a clause on my quote:
Due to a volatile market, we reserve the right to bill for materials at the prices in effect at the time of delivery.

Copper prices have risen 81% in Australia since 1 Jan 06 according to a flier that was bandied around my fathers work last week. A roll of 1.5mm2 twin switch wire was AU$108.80 from the wholesaler in Alice Springs about 3 weeks ago, supposedly has increased since then.
