I have a 1999 Silverado C150 extended cab with a 285hp 5.3 which I have been very happt with and it has never gotten less than 14mph normally and is usually in the 15-16 range. Maybe in a very cold winter a touch less. I pulled a 1991 Corvette ZR1 back from Florida an a HD caravan trailer going up to 80mph and never got less than 14mph on any part of the trip. Got 16MPG pulling the bare trailure down to get it.
I have also got up to 21MPG on long freeway drives.
I don't know what it would do with a 250 though.

Well I can't say much on the Ford, but my 2000 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 , 5.9L gas, 3.55 Dana 60 axles, is an absolute thirsty pig! Don't get me wrong, I have not had any problems with the truck but I really wish it was a diesel...
I only get 12 to 14 M.P.G I think ( if I worked it out right ) just driving around in the city, not towing anything, but then again the truck is one heavy beast weighing in at 6000 pounds with a full tank o gas!!
I wouldn't drive anything else! [Linked Image]

I can't say anything about the mileage but the 5.4 is an awesome motor.
My friend has one in an new F350 and he can keep right up with me towing our race cars on open trailers. I have a '96 F250HD with a 7.5l/460.
I LOVE m truck but will replace it with a new F350 real soon.
You can't compare 150's to 250's and 350's. The latter are real heavy duty trucks. Like rewired, my F250 weighs 6300#...dry with no driver!
I'm lucky to break 12mpg, but I really don't care.
Although I will say, the new F150s are very nice.

I have to ask. DO you guys actually like working out of a utility body/tool cap trucks?
I can NOT see doing that. Much as I hate vans I can't see working out of anything else. 'Cept maybe the new Freightliner Sprinter I drool after....

I have an f150.One thing to look out for on the new 5.4 motors are the plugs. From 97-2003 a small percentage would literally blow the plug and cop out of the head resulting in a $3000 bill if not under warranty. The 2004 and up 5.4 was redesigned with a new plug but we are finding that they must be replaced every 30,000 miles or the plug can a seize in the head and bust off so watch for it.I really do love my 99 but hate the motor for the plug and piston slap problems.I have not had any but i sits in the back of your mind. The dodges have tranny problems and the chebbies have piston slap and valve problems so is depends on your luck.
Like someone already said get a Power Stroke diesel just IMHO.

Well my F-250 is a little older. has the 5.8 2WD with a Knapheide utility topper, which is a heavy topper, plus I carry a lot of stuff. I averaged around 9 to 11 MPG city. Don't forget you can't really compare mileage between a 150 and a 250, the 250 is heavier and geared lower. Plus with 4x4 I am guessing you will be lucky to break 10 MPG if it is loaded.
Of course the 250 is for sale now, I got a new 1 ton van with a high top Royal body. Never bothered to ask the salesman about MPG, what does it matter? The way I see it, the customer pays for the fuel anyway. As it turns out it gets 8.6 MPG right on the nose every time.

A 5.4 is just a stroked 4.6 like the 351 was a stroked 302.And the 6.O is a 5.4 with two extra cylinders. The most reliable out of the new motors is the 4.6,5.4,6.0 in that order.Best bang for your buck is the 5.4
Performance depends the HP to weight ratio torque is off the line power and HP is rolling power.
I still say diesel though
cheers

I got an 04 F-350, crew cab and dual axles.
Job box in the back adds another 500#. Im getting 12.3-12.5 mpg on diesel.
My buddy has a 250 with the 7.0 diesel, crew cab, and gets 14 mpg taking it easy on it.
I would have a van/sprinter except I also need to transport the kids around town. Before this truck, I had 3500 gmc gas engine with an ARE contractor cap, which I really liked( the cap ). This big block truck averaged 8-10 mpg. Sucked gas and hauled ass.

The old service company I used to work for in LA had a fleet of about 150 vans, all 1997 through 99's, ½ and ¾ ton, from all of the Detroit "Big 3"
The Dodge's seemed to have bad transmissions chronically (trannies seem to be a downfall of alot of things Mopar [Linked Image] ) But the Ford 5.4L's in the E250's seemed to be the engine that blew the most... The company had a "Van Graveyard" with about 15 or so Fords rotting in it, amongst about 6 Dodge's and a GMC Savana 3500 (which a disgruntled tech went offroading with and took the oilpan off with a large rock)

I can attest also that these vans were driven hard! and they were usually loaded right about their weight limit, if not more. But most of the "Blue Ovals" in the back had less than 100K on the clock as well! The Chevy Express 2500 I had went 149K and decided to amuse me by throwing a rod on me about 120 miles from home.

My current truck is a 2000 Chevy 2500 with a Harbor body, with a 350 under the hood. 180K and still pulls strong! I've never really kept track of MPG since we have a gas pump in the company yard, but I can't imagine it being more than about 12-14 mpg... But working out in the middle of nowhere, I tend to be a little lead-footed.
