Can somebody give me some three wire pump quick troubleshoot tips?

How can I Id the start windings if color is not known?

Black=?
Red=?
Yellow=?

What do I look for in the control box?
Any other tips regarding common problem would be much appreciated.

Thank You

With a 240v Gould pump, yellow=line, black=run and red=start. i don't know if this is an industry standard.
