Do any of our more experienced members know when UF was first available. I'm working on a house built in the 1940s that has some outlets wired with 2 wire UF (no ground wire). I thought thermoplastics weren't available until the late 1950s or 1960s.

Anyone remember???

Dave55, try typing in this http: (sorry, I don't know how to include something as a link)
http://www.codecheck.com/wiring_history.htm#uf

basically, it says that the equivalent to UF was invented right around/after WWII.

Thanks alot, goodwill. That's a very interesting link. I've heard the one about running wire in gas pipe as the beginnings of conduit. Can you imagine pulling through a gas elbow?

whew, glad I wasn't an electrician back then!
or, could you imagine working only with "rigid"? The facility where I work was built in the 30's, and every inch of pipe had to be cut, threaded, reamed, etc...pretty labor intensive. in the Benfield Manual, it says that because of the awkwardness of the first benders for EMT, it didn't come into wide use until the mid-30's.
sorry to float off the thread :-)
