I saw a brochure outlining the use of the Crouse Hinds Cam-lok connectors http://www.tmb.com/Pdf/Cam-Lok.pdf
I was wondering if there is any restriction on where they can be used and who can connect equipment using them?

I looked at a 315 amp connector and noted that you could touch the brass pin and socket with your finger when the plug was apart.

The other worry I have is even though the connectors are colour (Australian Spelling) coded they are interchangable. So that a green plug can be plugged into a red socket.
Or an earth connection could be inadvertantly left off.

So when these connectors are used, is there a stipulation to ensure only licensed electricians can use them?


I have personally only seen these connectors used once here in Aus are they in common use in the states?

I have only seen them used in the US for traveling distribution equipment.

Carnivals, Concerts etc.

They are kind of scary as they get worn they do not 'loc' anymore, the roadies fix that with gaffers tape.

Check out 520.53(K) & (P). Also, there is a movement among many companies to make the EGC and grounded conductors reversed. So, at the company switch you would have the EGC and grounded conductor as a male connector and the phases as a female.
Qualified personnel should realize to retire a connector that won't lock... then there's reality.
Notice that it says "Qualified Personnel" not "Licensed Personnel"...
Depending on the situation we will add colored electrical tape to the connector to use it as another conductor type, such as using a black as a red when the red I was going to use is damaged from someone droppiing it off a truck...
