I had a tree outside my house hit by lighting 2 weeks ago. Blew 3 out 3 tires on stepsons car, tripped every breaker in subpanel in garage, tripped all my GFCI recepticles, came in on the cable and took out my ethernet card and cable modem, killed one phone, 1 tv, took the color from another tv and 1 vcr. Not a pleasent experance, but I was lucky it didn't burn the house down!

Am I the only one that finds it absolutley fascinating what lightning does? The problems it may/does cause are so incredible and yet so erratic...it knocked the color out of the t.v.?!!!

It was an older tv. Now looks like an old black and white with about an 1/2 inch of color at the bottom of the screen. Makes the new Falcon uniforms look better that way though!

Maybe the circuits that carry the color portion of the signal got toasted?
A repairman might be able to sort it out....

Sorry to hear about that, but glad that nobody was hurt.
It would be quite possible for a surge of power to knock out part of the chroma circuitry of a TV. With no chroma signal at the decoder, the set will act just as it would if it were receiving a black-&-white signal.
If the colors at the bottom of the screen are weird (i.e. not what they should be) then it may well have left the shadowmask in the tube magnetized, or even distorted out of shape.

My modem got hit by lightning somehow, it still works, but only connects to 11,776 (from the 26,400 I usually got, it was a 33.6 modem). Luckily, the 56K modem I bought through an E-bay auction arrived the next day, and I am getting what I really should be. (44K some.)
