Well folks, on a more somber note, at least for me, I feel compelled to write this as a reminder to everyone that, no matter what your political views are, and no matter where you stand in your opinion of whats going on in the Middle-East, please voice your support and encouragement for the troops who are, very soon, going to be placed in “harms way”. As a combat veteran, as well as an American citizen, I have seen, first-hand, the ugliness of war, the tragedy of “collateral damage” to innocent lives, on both sides, and, most importantly I think, the disrespectful way a lot of our warriors were treated, upon their return home. I’m sure that most all of you know someone who has been called to serve, in this latest conflict, whether it be a son, or daughter, or husband, or wife, or some other relative of yours. Some of you may have a co-worker who has been called up. Please remember to support them, encourage them, pray for them, and watch over their loved ones while they are gone. And, most of all, pray for their safe and speedy return. “Let not the criticisms of the political machine, cause our young warriors to founder on their mission.”
God bless us all,
Gramps

While I am against any war ...
I support any person who makes a conscience decision to fight (on either side) or to not fight.
In wars there are no "right" positions.

This may sound trite, but it happened. Recently my Youngest son enlisted in the Marines. My wife was furious and said to me, 'Why didnt you say something, talk him out of it.' I said to her,'He came to me and said that he wanted to serve his country, and you know I couldnt think of one good reason why Not.' He has been at Parris Island for a month and a half now and doing well.
God bless the United States of America

I was almost drafted in the Vietnam conflict and I was willing to go. Luckily the conflict ended and I didn't have to serve. Now my oldest is 17 and I will be worried that he might have to go. I too am not pro or con this conflict. I hope and pray that everything is settled real soon and no lives are lost. We can only hope and pray.

While I am not sure of the politics of the whole thing, I will support wnyone who is willing to defend our country. This is from a song by Tby Keith.
Spoken:
Following September 11th last year, everybody that was a poet or writer or a song writer of any kind had a reason to write some words down or some thoughts down on a piece of paper. And I was no different than anybody else, that's what you do when you do what I do. And Uhh
My father served in the army in the 50's he lost his eye in a training combat mission. He came home he put up a flag at the farm I was raised on. I lost him six months prior to the attacks on New York City and the United States and Uhh that flag flew out there in that yard and it's flown there every day.
He raised me right and he never bitched one time about losing his eye. Never heard him cry about it one time, he was glad to go do it, that's why we're free today and it's our turn to stand on what our fathers and fore fathers did for us and make sure we don't let them down.
I wrote a song in the following days after September 11th it's called the "Angry American" and I want to send it out to my father tonight.
Sang ....
American Girls and American Guys We'll always stand up and salute We'll always recognize When we see Ole Glory Flying There's a lot of men dead So we can sleep in peace at night When we lay down our head
My daddy served in the army Where he lost his right eye But he flew a flag out in our yard Till the day that he died He wanted my mother, my brother, my sister and me To grow up and live happy In the land of the free.
Now this nation that I love Has fallen under attack A mighty sucker punch came flying in From somewhere in the back Soon as we could see clearly Through our big black eye Man, we lit up your world Like the 4th of July
Hey Uncle Sam Put your name at the top of his list And the Statue of Liberty Started shaking her fist And the eagle will fly And there's gonna be hell When you hear Mother Freedom Start ringing her bell And itll feel like the whole wide world is raining down on you Ahhh Brought to you Courtesy of the Red White and Blue
Ohhh Justice will be served And the battle will rage This big dog will fight When you rattle his cage And you'll be sorry that you messed with The U.S. of A. 'Cause we'll put a boot in your ass It's the American way
Hey Uncle Sam Put your name at the top of his list And the Statue of Liberty Started shaking her fist And the eagle will fly And there's gonna be hell When you hear Mother Freedom Start ringing her bell And itll feel like the whole wide world is raining down on you Brought to you Courtesy of the Red White and Blue
From me Thanks to all who have served. Scott

My Father was a WW2 vet. After I was grown, He described some of the horrors he saw and experienced. He was at Dachau when it was liberated, and tears would come to his eyes when he described it 40 years later.I never had to serve in the Military, but he instilled in me a respect for all who do.My 1st cousin (same age as my Father) was wounded in WW2 and then volunteered for Korea where he was wounded again. When asked why he volunteered for Korea His reply was" Hell, somebody's got to do it,and besides, soldierin's the only thing I ever been good at" May God Watch over our soldiers. Russell

I'm not happy about the events that have taken place lately, and I'm afraid that war is eminent. I thought I might sit on the sidelines until more people replied to this thread, and then I could respond to the posts of others. If I waited, then, the membership of ECN wouldn't see how I really feel about this matter. I am a veteran, but I didn't serve in combat. I was in the Navy in the mid 80's. We flew air cover for "reflagged" Kuwaiti tankers. So, I don't speak from the same perspective as gramps. I'll just be "bone white honest". I'm behind our president, and I'm for our troops going over there and "kicking the crap out of Iraq". Saudi Arabia, you're next on the list. We might as well get ready because we will lose some people before all this is over. The problem we have is, "do we stand back and let terrorists kill our people, or do we go over there and kill them first. I'm for the latter. I'm for killing the enemy because I have two girls in elementary school, that I want to have the same life that I've had. They won't have the life that I've had if they have to live in the fear of terrorism. I want to kill the enemy because they want to kill me. They want to kill me because of my "way of life", and "what I believe". I think that there is a fundamental difference in my motivation, and the enemy's. They hate us because of our way of life. What did we ever do to them? Our way of life is superior to theirs. We have better medicine, technology, opportunities, etc, etc, etc. They hate us for it. Why? We have better living conditions, and more food, clothes, etc. They hate us for it. Why? I can only offer one reason. They're evil. So, george, I disagree with you, and I won't apologize for it. We The United States are right this time. I couldn't take the stand that I'm taking, if I didn't know that I was on the right side.

As Politics is rarely a good Topic even amongst the best of Friends, I think we should close this. I think We all wish for the best possible outcome and a safe home to all our Troops.
