The power Co. wants to charge a friend of mine to move there power line which runs over his preposed new Garage location. This power line feeds the house next door to him not his??? I was wondering how its dealth with in other areas. This is in Upper Pen. Of mi.

my neighbors had to pay for the lines to be moved because the proposed dwelling was directly under the power lines. $54,000

they had to do it, otherwise the poco would not allow them to build.

You might have your friend check to see if the power company has a right of way or an easement through your friends property. If they don't, then the POCO has no right to cross his property to serve someone else.

Around here, the POCO will not cross another persons property to serve your house.

I agree with Tom...an easement would be required to cross property.

As to fees & charges, here in NJ (thanks to deregulation) fees have become a way of life. In your case, if there is an easement, then your friend has a problem.
It should show on his survey.

They told him the poles have been there for years so an easement is not required.

I think that this is a situation of which was there first.

If you want to build in a place that has lines running over it, you should be expected to pay for the lines to be moved.

That is only my personal opinion though.
