Here is a pic of an old-style LB. Please note that the cover is ceramic, and has two holes in it....you can actually see the wires within.

Such an open (or non-weathertight) construction might be the source of the "don't splice here" trade practice.

Wouldn't those holes be intended for threading wires through? For a transition between a conduit system and K+T?

Actually, NJ, you're probably not far off; there was a conduit body that had a threaded hub in the center of the back (not a "Tee") that was used where today a 'weatherhead' is used at the service entrance. The covers, naturally, also came in a 3-hole variety.
