Isn't Hartford, CT the home of Hubbell? Is this by any chance Hubbell equipment?

Actually, there is some equiptment by Trumbull(a precursor to GE, I think), Westinghouse, Metropolitan, and others.....Very interesting stuff to work with.. especially the 2 phase 5 wire stuff....

I know a house that has a small subpanel that looks like a miniature version of the last picture. From what I remember it was inside a wooden Cabinet up on the second floor. I wish I had thought to take a picture.

I've seen this style Panelboard in an old building being used as a Cabinetmaking shop. I remember seeing it covered with sawdust too. Sorry about that! .. It's got your Name up there now.

Yes it is the old Colt factory....Colt moved their remaining operations from this factory to West Hartford in '91.
The place is undergoing a 120 million dollar facelift; commercial and residential space....I've got a lot more pics of the place, but didn't want to clutter up the board.....

How would one go about opening/closing some of those switches? Surely not by hand?

Hopefully with rubber gloves, boots and a flash suit....
