Hello,

I am looking for information on use of ESD grounding devces when working on electrical circuits. Specifically I am interested in guidance as to when an Electronics technician who may be assembling and testing systems should remove ESD garments, heel straps and wrist straps. Alternatively , can you point me to someone or somewhere I can find this information. I do have the OSHA 29CFR 1910:33 and .167, but it is not clear on just when removal of these devioces should be enforced.

Kevin P.

I worked in a micro-electronics lab testing micro-chip assemblies. We were required to wear a daily tested(and documented) wrist strap that was hooked up to the ESD bench mat, floor mat whenever we were handling/touching/testing the ESD assemblies or the micro chips.
The policy and procedures were generated by the Q.A.dept.
Whenever we left our work stations we "un-hooked" our wrist straps, but before we went back to work we were required to test them while we were connected. The test was measuring the strap connection to the skin.
