I have always used solid copper for the GEC (residential). In this months Fine Homebuilding there is an article on services by Cliff Popejoy with photos showing a stranded copper GEC. I was curious what other guys prefer and why.

My supplier only has solid, soft drawn bare #4 & #6...

In Wisconsin we used stranded (braided)... Much easier to work with!

I'd use stranded if I could get it without special order...

I always use stranded, insulated #6 & #4.
It is easier to handle, and I think it looks neater.

Is THWN considered Sunlight Resistant?

Or do you install in a raceway?

Just wondering...

#4 stranded, for 100A & 200A services because 250.64(B) differs in 'physical damage' vs. 'severe physical damage' , it matters.....

Virgil, use bare......no sunlight issue i know of....

In my own experience... The 3/0 Cu THWN I used as SE conductors in the last service I did ( Mission Impossible thread ...) was indeed labelled as sunlight resistant on the outer sleeve.

Answered my own Q! All I had to do was wake up and think about it!

There is no issue of bare or stranded wire or sunlight resident. Just make sure that it is not subject to physical damage.
