I want to get a new toner or circuit tracer and I want a good one. I want to be able to find wires, live or dead, even inside walls. I also would like to be able to locate where a dead short or cut is, even if the wire is buried. I'm considering Greenlee's 2011, $440 plus tax at my supply house.

Do any of you have this model or do you have a better model or an equivilent model for less $$$. Any advice? Thanks.

Eagle, I have an Amprobe Pasar which works great for tracing. Does all the things you listed. It's a bit more money but I swear by it!

Electric eagle,

I had the Amprobe paser tracer too. I had both types. One for dead circuits and one for live circuits. The live circuit tracer worked great. It paid for itself many times over. You could work in a building and only trip off the circuit you were working on with out taking out the wrong circuit.

I looked at the Amprobe models and they apparently have several model labeled Pasar. Do you guys know what model numbers you have. (At2002?) Thanks.

David, I have the AT-2004 . It has two transmitters, one for energized circuts and one for unenergized. It tracks underground feeders very well. Have even tied on to buried tv and phone lines to keep from trenching through. Used one for years that belong to a buddy that worked at the supply house. I bought mine this year and have been very pleased. (psss, don't tell anyone but I got mine on ebay... cheap!).

I have been using the Amprobe / Pasar Current Tracer package for about 6 Years, and it's by far the best, most reliable and most flexible I have seen.

Can't quite remember the complete kit's model number, but I'll list the individual items for reference [the original kit came in an irritatingly small plastic box which has become filler for the Recycle Bin!]:

Receiver ["Probe"]= Model number P26,

Transmitter = Model number T300 (6-300 Volts AC or DC),
for Voltages of 300-600 VAC / VDC, the T300 Transmitter can be run through the "Wide Range Converter" Model number 600CKA.

This tracer can be used on live circuits, or on dead circuits / conductors (via a 9 volt drycell).

The Transmitter pulses a cadence of 6 KHz tones, which hasn't yet interferred with any sensitive equipment.

After using it for about 3 months and across various types of projects, I had the feel for any "wierd" readings that would pop up.

Seems like we paid over $600.00 for it back in 1996, but it was well worth every penny!
