This lady gave me a little scrap of paper with instructions on it: 40A 240V circuit with disconnect and whip. can someone tell me do you think they mean a generic whip, like for lighting or something like that?
thanks.

dripjoy,

If it is for the unit outside it would be a weatherproof disconnect and whip. LT (Liquid-Tite) Flexible whips are available in 6 ft lengths & prewired for 30A or 40A complete with connectors. Or you can make your own.
