We have a 12 lead mtr. For a fire pump . Voltages on name plate 200/400.
We're being told it can be hooked up to a Straight 208 vOLT 3 PHASE. One Starter/
Wiring diagram on mtr shows Start y Run Delta.
20 hp. anyone ever run into this???

Could it be a two speed motor? sounds to me like a set of windings for low speed and a set for high speed simple resistance test across windings might give you a clue!

Just use a start Y, run Delta starter. and feed it with the 208 Y.

The starter will have two contact sets and coils which should be interlocked.

The run configuration is delta, so hook it up per the low voltage run connection.

From a liability standpoint for building-fire protection, it may be a serious mistake not to have specific documentation that the starting method called out by the pump manufacturer is unambiguously provided but the fire-pump controller, with the two correctly interconnected.

If the fire pump is intended for reduced-voltage starting, a controller providing only full-voltage starting may be a critical misapplication.

Answer is Delta Run. Checked with several motor rewind shops ect.

Its also in Electrical Engineering Pocket handbook.

Reduced voltage starting protects the power system, not the motor. Prevents things like neighbor's lights flickering. Would not afffect the fire pump function.

1st off, welcome to ECN!

I believe the point of which Bjarney is referring to
(reply covering the Wye / Delta starting intentions of the Motor and the possible liability involved with misapplication),
would be critical issue to the design and application of this particular Motor/Pump assembledge.

In other words, if the connected Pump has something similar to excessive head pressure (per an Air Compressor's Pump at start without "dumping" the pressurized air between cylinder and tank), the Motor may either stall / continuous Locked Rotor scenario, or draw excessive Current for an excessive time period - both of which will cause one or both of the following:
<OL TYPE=A>

[*] Overcurrent device trip,

[*] Huge volumes of Smoke loss from Motor's windings.
</OL>

I can see the Lower Voltage (Wye Connection) starting means allowing the Pump to get things flowing enough to allow full speed / line voltage connection of Motor to enable without the effects of "A" and/or "B" above.

***DISCLAIMER***
I am probably wrong about the starting intentions, along with Bjarney's reply, so feel free to flame away at me if above information is indeed bunk!

Controller & motor supplied by the Fire Pump installers , Reason I had asked the question was for my piece of mind.
