This all starts when a tenant in a rented house blows the fuse running her laundry power in her garage... she removes the type S fuse & thinks that the base is broken off in the socket, (but its the adapter)... She chews up the adapter & socket unto uselessness... She then goes outside to turn off main power... Beings that the knifeblade tie is broken, she reaches in & grabs the knifeblade in the fusible disco with HER HANDS!!! & BAREFOOT!! ... I told her that she may want to let her landlord know she's looking at some sizeable repairs!

Just about the only way this could be worse is if the service equipment was located outside and she was standing in the grass.... [Linked Image]

I can see how she might think the fuse came apart, but if it still looked whole, and the new fuse fit in the socket just fine, that's a strong indicator that she should probably refrain from mangling things with pliers.... [Linked Image]

"Sizeable repairs"! You ain't lying: Bring a crow bar, a sledge-hammer, and 55 gallon trash-can to this job. [Linked Image]

How would you remove a Type-S (FustatĀ®) base adapter? I know they make (used to makes?) tools to get them out, but is it possible to do it any other way?

That's what I love about this forum; you can learn something new every hour!

I always thought those type "S" adapters were non-removeable. [Linked Image]

Big John... This IS located outside!!! [Linked Image] but over a concrete driveway!
Scott... You're uncanny! near 7th & Ximeno, Long Beach!...
I never knew a tool existed to remove the type S adapters either! It almost looks like a corkscrew/meter ring key! [Linked Image]

Who makes that tool? Do you have a part #?
I have enough trouble getting those out without destroying the panel socket.

I've had one of these tools for 20+ years. Real handy item. You insert the tool with the cutting blade resting on the rim of the adapter and you turn it, it peels off the ring and allows you to remove the bakelite insert, then you flip the tool around so the round end is in the remaining shell and unscrew it as you would a broken light bulb.
