There were 4 individual saws and a dustcollector connected, each with its own EXO & Mag Starter. The T1 terminals in the mags of all the saws were jumpered together, and 1 wire was run to the coil of the duster's mag to make it run when any saw was turned on, (other side of 480 coil went to line in duster mag)
Bottom Line: You turned off a disconnect to change a motor. You tested the power & it was off. While your working, someone turned on another saw 100' away, and your AØ motor lead was instantly 277 to ground, because it was being fed by a totally different source. You never got a chance to figure out what happened.
(but fortunately we fixed it first)

Wow! How did you manage to discover this the easy way... sans funeral. I guess opening up this "pandora's box" was enough to raise suspicion!

There was a 3/4" conduit that ran the length of the installation for the control. It only had 1 pink #14 in it. Red Flag went up.
We built the building for this Lumberyard/ Homecenter in '97, they had their "Millwrong"(nothing right about him) do the machinery work after we left.

Nice save! Of your life that is. This is another example of "if it works, it must be OK."
What is it about woodworking and or sawmills? Around here, 9 out of 10 have some serious problems. The 2 favorite tricks are: using green for a phase conductor on 480 and since 480 panelboards are more expensive, using a 120/240 panelboard on a 480 system.
