i am not sure about ceilng fans but 3 feet from cold air return is a ibc and ubc rule
also heard 2 foot change in roofline in the same room will be changed(i.e. a bedroom with a dormer that has a vault will not require 2 smokes in that room) also avoid placing smoke within 12 inches of peak and not exceeding 3 foot from peak
