A recent thread asked about splicing in LB's, and other conduit bodies.

Here is a pic of an old-style LB. Please note that the cover is ceramic, and has two holes in it....you can actually see the wires within.

Such an open (or non-weathertight) construction might be the source of the "don't splice here" trade practice.
