My Question:

How Long Does It Take To Learn the NEC?

My personal opinion:

As far as I am concerned it takes an entire career for anyone who is involved in the electrical industry!

I am still learning, and it has been almost 40 years now!

How much experience, or training should someone have before being introduced to the NEC?

The following comes from the NECH;

 Quote:
The National Electrical Code is not intended to be used as a design specification, or an instruction manual for untrained persons. The NEC is intended for use by capable engineers and electrical contractors in the design and/or installation of electrical equipment; by inspection authorities exercising legal jurisdiction over electrical installations; by property insurance inspectors; by qualified industrial, commercial, and residential electricians; and by instructors of electrical apprentices or students.

Like you said, it's a lifetime learning experience. I think that's why we have a mandatory continuing ed requirement here in NJ; EC's and AHJ'S

IMHO, I don't think that "anybody" knows the complete Code, the key is knowing where to locate the answer to your question!

I sometimes wonder if it's "Learnable"!

Like HotLine said, you never quit learning the NEC. Part of one's understanding also comes with teaching others.

It used to amaze me how Joe McPartland could quote Code text. He musta' had a perfectly photographic memory.

I will share you admiration for Joe when he makes his next sales visit to my office, unless your speaking of his dad.

How long does it take? How about forever?

Did you ever notice that look on an electricians face when he realizes that he has been doing something wrong for 10 or 15 years?

While we're on the subject of the NEC, I'm amazed by how many electricians do not own a current copy or have even cracked open a code book since their apprenticeship days.

Even the better ones here will ask for advice rather than open the NEC up...

I'm working on a list of common violations to help me refer to them quicker, mostly residential stuff.

I've got one page and I'm only up to section 212!

Heck, I might even get another copy of the NEC, one for the truck and one for the 'puter desk.

PS:

Did anyone see the movie Dragnet with Tom Hanks and Dan Akroyd? Were you as impressed as I was when "Joe Friday" started spouting out code sections (law, of course, not NEC)?

It was supposed to be parody, but I shouted out loud, "Go Joe"!

Ron -- Senior. He did once mention having 9 sons--all "in the industry."
