How do you like to run surface-mount receptacle and switch circuits in areas with block walls and finished ceilings, assuming you can get in there before the ceiling is finished?
Run MC entirely, through the joists and on down the walls to the device boxes? Run NM through the joists and down the wall to device boxes or is that a violation of "protection from damage". Would you then run the NM down the wall slightly below the ceiling then into a vertical length of EMT to the box. I can picture it but I haven't seen it.
MC is more costly but less labor-intensive and maybe more aesthetically pleasing. Do you have another solution?

I have used conduit in the past and always tried to keep all my runs vertical, another option would be wiremold. both of these look much better than fastening MC cable on the surface.
