In Canada, many first year apprentices are just that, helpers.
A rule of thumb here, and sometimes law is 50-60% of journeyman rate,
2nd year 60-70%,
3rd year 70-80%,
4th year 80-90%.

Last 2 of our first year entry was 50% of journeyman rate.
