In a home today I noted a long (50') run of urd that went out to the garage (100a sub.) Exposed basement ceiling, was run on joists and plates. Is it legal ?

It is not even legal inside even if you put it in a raceway. It must terminate outside of the structure.

ok stupid question...what's urd? I'm not familiar with that terminology...I'm guessing underground direct burial cable, or U.F ...Forgive the stupid question

It's that direct burial triplex cable that utility companies generally use for new underground services.
