Upon changing bulbs in the big hallway chandelier the sockets got my curiosity. The chandelier is probably as old as the house, making it 92-93 years. The sockets are the old kind, brass with a porcelaine collar screwed to the outside of the thread that should in theory cover the bul thread and act as a spacer between socket thread and outer shell. There are two sizes of collars, and this one exposes a real lot of thread! So I started suspecting it could actually have been intended for ES26 bulbs! I don't have any to prove i though.

Hmm... not until the next bulb change is due, i.e. until 2 of the 3 bulbs are gone. The chandelier is a good 4m above the stairs and dragging the big ladder with the extension feet out of the basement and onto the stairs is awful work. I might have a few similar but less extreme sockets within reach, I'll have a look.

Just be careful mate,
Pics are one thing, a full body cast is another. [Linked Image]

Well, I have to get the ladder there anyway, only not now. When it's time I'll get a second person to help me carry the ladder, once set up it's quite safe. I'll post a pic of the entire chandelier though... it's beautiful, but... it's more like an enclosed lantern, shaped like a diamond and it only opens at the bottom. So you have to wrestle one arm inside the fixture from below and dig around inside. To make matters worse, it has the tip pointing down, with one bulb being right in the middle of the opening and the other two up and out on the sides. Basically that means you have to reach around the bottom center bulb to reach the other two. Mix this with not really matching sockets, certainly unpolarized supply, no ground and a switched neutral... maybe if I get the bigger collars I'll swap them, should make the whole thing a lot safer. New sockets are out of question, they're quite visible. So for now I'll just be _really_ careful, as you have to be working something hot.

Hm, try to shoot through fairly small glass panes that probably haven't been cleaned for years [Linked Image]
