Is this someone's idea of home-made foot-path lighting?

I guess they wanted something more "distinctive" than the standard low-voltage lanterns on little plastic stakes used in fancy houses.

Seems to me like someone just plopped the lamp on the ground and ran a wire from underneath...along the ground.

Was this actually in use?

NEC 300-5 discusses burial of the cable, not the post, right?

When I brought this (second photo) situation up for discussion once, a very well-qualified party responded "you only have to bury it to a minimun depth if you bury it- there's nothing that says you can't just lay it on the ground."
Comments?

352.12(C) Physical Damage. Where subject to physical damage unless identified for such use.

How do the other members read this as it may apply?
