Joe-

I found this light bulb test panel at a hardware store in San Francisco.

Note the tape used to insulate the screws on the lamp sockets.

This unit was mounted right on the wall in the very public light bulb isle for any customer to use!!!

What's not safe about it?

They have a sign up that says "Please turn off when not in use"

It could be worse though. The tape could be gone.

Hey, could you use that as a fuse checker too?

Many of the old family-type hardware stores in Britain (there are still a few left) have boards festooned with various lampholders and switches for testing bulbs.

They actually make this one look quite good by comparison. Some of them resemble the props from an old Boris Karloff movie!

You know, they do sell surface mount lampholders that are totally enclosed (a porcelain collar screws over the base with the terminals).

I have one mounted over my workbench at home. It replaced the open-terminal cleat socket I had put there before.

Yes. You can see the reducers in some of the sockets to accomodate smaller bulbs.

I remember seeing one of these testers (much better wired, though) at an Ernst store many years ago. I always got a real kick out of one sign they had posted above it:

"DO NOT PUT 12 VOLT BULBS IN TESTER".

I just have to wonder how many people omitted the words, "DO NOT"?

Pretty close- Washington State (Shoreline).

I just remembered what else I used to see at that store- porcelain knobs and tubes!!! And this was circa 1980!
