Most likely was the use of a screw-in adapter to convert that socket into a two prong adapter, with a length of zip cord to feed the chand.!

Just did a remodel where the kitchen flourscents were fed that way from the old square recessed fixtures from the 70's. Wish I had taken pics.

What the heck is holding that box to the recessed housing?
Did they have a big medallion over the downlight hole or something?

This is a classic example of why I love these pictures so much. It never ceases to amaze me what people can think up. I never in a million years could have "invented" something like this
