This box is in a house that experienced a fire , after the drywall had been removed we discovered this and a few other gems, the box was cut down in depth because of the thickness of the wall studs....seems logical, why not cut the box in half rather than frame out the wall.

In the second pic why even bother with a box. Same as the 3 and fourth pic no box on the range

Was this house fire electrical in nature.... because that wiring SUCKS! Gotta love that high current (is that 10/3?) flying splice and open back "box" the handyman so creatively devised.

And the range socket is just priceless..... no box at all and since when was 10AWG allowed on a 50A circuit? I doubt the wires are fan cooled in there. \:D

Aw, come on! There's a non-combustible concrete block wall behind that open-back box ;\)

Seriously, boxes like that would perhaps be legal in most European countries, but everything else is just flat out a mess.

In the first pic it also looks as though the cable was just run across the front of the studs. Presumably the drywall was notched on the back to go over them?

Probably they didn't want to corrupt the structural integrity of the stud ;\)

If this is just a small taste of what there is in the walls elsewhere, maybe it would be best to call the F.D back and see if they want the place for a "live burn" training exercise? LOL

Pic 2: Is that a J-box w/ the BX cable in a previously drywalled joist bay? What else do you expect after seeing that?

10-4 on the fire department, tell them they have a new house to play with!

Do you have your browser set to reject images for other than the originating website?

If that doesn't cure it, try viewing them directly from:

http://www.electricalphotos.com/showgallery.php/cat/503

They're the photos titled "Electrical box 1/4" thru "Electrical box 4/4."
