I 'found' this part of a new construction job last Sunday. Going for a brunch cruise for a birthday for a friend.
Had to wait to board, so, walking around and curious as a AHJ....found the pad mount utility xfr....un-energized and accessable without the keys.

Low & behold....look at this quality workmanship.

IF I can get back there again, and with a real camera (this is from the cell phone)...more to come

Thanks John.

What on earth is going on with the colors there?

I think the terminal on the lower left is X1, but is the one upper right with mostly conductors taped red X3? 208Y/120?

But then is the remaining terminal X0? Red, brown, a couple of orange, one of which is marked black farther down.....

Left landing is XO (notice the bond jumper) and then left to right X1, X2, X3.

I assume it's 120/208 Y; but.....all I could 'see' inside the small building adjacent to this was the very top of 1 panel.

The CT cabs didn't look much better!

If I didn't see the lugs, I'd think these were hoses for a soda dispenser.

What type of wire is that, John?

I'm not sure...from experience I hope it's THHN/THWN! Yes, soda hoses! As this is not in the Twp I work in, I had to do a quick look-see. I'm going to try to get back there for a better 'look', without attracting to much attention..you know that trespass thing.

It looks to me like it's that old fahioned rubber and cloth-wrapped wire.

I know that cloth-wrapped power cord is still made, but I didn't know they still made that heavy duty house wiring stuff anymore!

John,
Are them wires covered with some sort of numbered tape?.
One thing I can't get over is the length of them bolts on the transformer lugs, that looks like an arc fault accident just waiting to happen.

Good eyes, I think that it's number tape, that's my first impression. As I hinted above....had to be quick & careful.

The bolts would buy a red tag from me; and the utility will have a comment also.

Sven:
No, cloth wrapped and rubber went away a long time ago (at the supply houses)

Stay safe

Mike, if that's indeed number tape wrapped around those wires, I'd personally kick the hind parts of the sparky if he worked for me. That number tape is very costly!!

And I hadn't really noticed the bolts...Yikes!! They also don't appear to be brass...but is brass (or other metal) a required type of material for those bolts?

Utility (PSE&G) requires 1/2" dia., non-magnetic stainless steel hardware on pad mount & CT terminations, per the Green Book specs.

As to length, aside from industry practice & good workmanship...the book says 'bolts mustthread thru the nuts, with several threads showing'... That can be subject to opinions (several). I use the closest stock length of bolts as 1/2" come in 1/2" length increments.

I'm going to try to get back there Mon.
