Hi folks,
Call me a neanderthal or what you like, I'm still using Windows 7 on my desktop.
But it keeps nagging me to upgrade to Windows 10.
Are you guys using this on a desktop and if so, what do you think of it?
Unless I can get some real-world thoughts on this OS, I'll be sticking with Windows 7.

Your thoughts?

Trumpy:
I have not upgraded as of yet
Maybe after a while, depending on what I hear
I'm with you on #7

Yes- and Hell No!

I upgraded my previous computer. For about two days it seemed fine - but then the glow began to dim.

My first kvetch was what did NOT come with it, what I had lost. For example, even the smallest vestige of "office" was gone .... to write and print a simple shopping list required me to add software. No word pad, no spreadsheets, nothing. I found that even simple games, like solitaire, were gone. Other programs, such as my photo editing program, did not run.

Within a week, the browser ("Edge") stopped working - in the middle of a session. It never came back. Thank heaven I had already downloaded another browser ... or I would have been unable to get on the internet at all.

Plus, there were NO resources available ... no "Dummies" book, etc.

So, when my computer died (screen failure), I made it a point to get a computer with 8.1 on it. It wasn't easy. Every new computer was either a stripped-down "Chromebook," or Windows 10. Eventually, I found one buried in the stock bin.

Games? Well, being cut off from Microsoft led me to discover other sources, such as Yahoo Games.

Most interesting, the various IT pros who had encouraged me to make the switch later denied ever saying such a thing. Oh, they won't 'bad mouth' Windows 10, claim it runs fine for them ... but also are now very careful in what they say. "You should get it" is one of the things they are NOT saying.

The new computer keeps urging me to upgrade. Not in this life!

What does that make me? I'm still using XP with Chrome. You can disable the annoying notifications. I followed TechSavy1's advise and they stopped.

I guess I should've mentioned that I also have a laptop with Win8 that I disabled the notifications on.

I went from 7 to 8.1 on my Desktop machine and lost the use of some important programs. I'm not ready to lose any more right now.

Laptop still has XP and that's OK by me.

Trumpy...to get rid of the annoying upsell from Microsoft for windows 10 you need to go to your updates and uninstall update KB3114409

That removed the constant badgering upsell bubble that comes on everytime you log in...

There's a program for getting rid of the windows 10 nag.
GWX control panel
It's said to be safe. But do a google search on GWX.
I've used it, haven't had any problems. your mileage may vary...

I upgraded one to 10 to see if I liked it. It has not been a bad experience as I did not loose any programs nor functionality. Usability suffers a bit, but it is acceptable. If I had to do that computer all over again, I probably would.

Yet that being said, I like windows 7 better and am sticking with it on another computer. I still don't like my computer with Vista (no upgrade there) and I still have two with XP not connected to the internet and they have their purposes.
Posted By: Trumpy Re: Windows 10, who's upgraded? - 01/11/16 12:29 AM
Exactly Bill,
I still have an ancient Dell laptop that runs XP, the only reason I'm still using it is because I can't migrate all of the music files off of the HDD to another computer because all of the DRM licences, I tried this some time ago and it nearly ended in tears.
One other reason I've stuck with this computer is that it still runs Windows Media Player 10, that let you edit media titles and what-not.
The Windows 7 desktop that I have runs WMP 12 and it has this really annoying volume compression feature that I've never been able to fully disable, it makes listening to music really painful.

What format are these in that you can't move them?
Can you resample them and load in MP3?
I guess I am happy that I only use MP3s

I upgraded this Toshiba Satellite L500 laptop quite early on and suffered problems which were partly my lack of understanding but also program shortcomings; there was no DVD driver available and the machine ran hot as two examples.
However there have been extensive updates since and all problems that bothered me seem to have been resolved with no intervention on my part. It seems to me that Microsoft decided to do their development testing in the field.
I've recently upgraded another similar machine with no problems observed.

Microsoft has always done all of their testing in the field.
That is why a version isn't stable until they are a year or two in.
XP finally settled down at SP3, then they dumped it.

Greg,
Yeah, I really wish I'd had the choice back then, all of the files in question use the .wma format, because that is what the "local" on-line music service at the time used to give you, these files also have a DRM licence with them, so if you try and move the files to another drive, nothing will play, even if you try moving the licences with the files.
It's the same when you rip song files from a CD to your HDD using WMP, it only has the option to save the files as a .wma file.
This service was taken off-line about 3 years ago and it no longer exists, which is handy when you've bought about 8-900 songs off of it.
Thankfully everything here these days is in MP3 format, without that DRM rubbish attached to it, I mean, if you buy something like that on-line and pay for it, I would have thought that you could store it wherever you liked, obviously I was wrong there.
I expect there is a way to convert these files to MP3 format, but how do you get around the inherent DRM thing?
Posted By: twh Re: Windows 10, who's upgraded? - 01/23/16 06:25 AM
A search of wma and drm comes up with SoundTaxi. The key words on the page are "convert WMA to MP3".

I fail to see where Windows 10 is a "upgrade", have it & hate it.

I have W7 on my laptop, and the laptop still hasn't downgraded to W10. One of my friends has recently (without her approval) automatically downloaded W10 and "couldn't do anything with it."

One major objection she had with it be that the start menu was difficult to use and navigate.

There's a fix for that with a free "Classic Shell" download that changes the start menu to a traditional Windows start menu.

http://www.howtogeek.com/223728/bring-the-windows-7-start-menu-to-windows-10-with-classic-shell/

The actual download is here> http://www.classicshell.net/

The download tries to sneak in some extra crap with it, but you can decline all the extras. smile

Scott,
What you and others who do not want their computers to automatically do their own upgrade with no say in the matter is Google "GWX Control Panel", run it as administrator and from there it's pretty straight forward.

I'm still wondering how W10 did an 'auto' download into the 2 laptops in my home. One did it about two weeks ago, and this one did it last week.

For a fact I did not 'click' on the download screen that was popping up on every startup.

Guess I'll live with it for now. Don't see to much that is better.

An IT guy told me that if you click on the "X" to close the pop-up, that means "upgrade". Only no means no.

I open Task Manager and kill the popup window from there.
I'm worried about those sneaky Microsoft bullies pulling something exactly like twh describes.

I've upgraded just this week. Still getting used to it, but I'm sure it will grow on me.

I was forced to when I bought a new laptop, I prefer Win8, but getting used to it. If you have less than 8GB of RAM, it is a bit of a resource hog.

So here's what happened - I was working on my pc, went to make some coffee, when I was back it said something along those lines "80% of the windows10 update completed", had to quickly unplug and restart the PC, thank god the updated was not completed. Windows10 suck...

I put W10 on two laptops in autumn 2016. I had teething problems on the first, (I've posted previously), but waited a while for Microsoft to sort themselves out before doing the second. At one point I suspected there was some conflict with Google Chrome, and dumped that. Since then I can honestly say I've had no issues. (Touch wood!)

I had tentatively accepted Windows 10 on a couple of computers at the office...

... until Microsoft decided to push an update to the ui one day which undid ALL of my customized changes, showing me that, despite the ability to change settings, Microsoft doesn't actually care how *I* want my computer to work, and has no hesitation whatsoever to change it around their way...

... and then there's the day I walked into a client's office to fix something that should have taken 30 seconds and had to wait 20 minutes instead for a Windows update...

I have one desktop running Windows XP, a handful running Windows 7. My main PC and my laptop both run Debian (Linux).

I am using windows 10 for quite many years and its great.
I would suggest you upgrade yours to windows 10.
Its fast, user-friendly and a lot compatible then windows 7.

I recently switched back to windows 10 after using MacOS. It's mainly because of my job. So, far I enjoy it pretty much, except for some bugs I face occasionally. I wonder if you had the same issues?
Posted By: gfretwell Re: Windows 10, who's upgraded? - 05/08/23 04:58 PM
I am staying with 7 until it stops working on things.

Hey there! I stumbled upon this thread while trying to find a solution to a similar issue. I just switched to Windows and was having trouble with Gens crashing in fullscreen mode too.
