Here is a photo of an Afghani Power Line Technician. Their electrical standards are non existent but at least the dress code is up there.

If I recall, I believe we had a service member in Afghanistan here a few months back (maybe even years back) inquiring about color-coding for a transformer or something. That looks like a real mess!

Ah ya and at the bottom of that pole there are probably like 60 meters hanging off the conductors too

Meters?? We all know good and well there's only one meter and the rest of that is pirated off of it! [Linked Image]

He is thinking "One more connection and we will have invisible power to the magic picture box just in time to watch Rambo III tonight"

I think that he's been given the not-very-popular job of removing the "taps" from the line. (Which must be deenergized)

There are a number of wires that are already cut off down around his midsection area.

I like that ladder - looks like bamboo. Cool balancing act too...

So...

Drunken escapades lead to severely risky public service penalty 'workouts'

Yikes...

I'd hate to think what the crime was.

Hairball high voltage conductors....

Yikes....

I'd like to add this picture.
It is from The Lineman's and Cableman's Handbook, Fourth Edition (1964). Much later in the book, PPE are discussed, with this disclaimer:

"Highly Recommended. While the author is a firm believer in the safety hat, it was not possible to change all illustrations to show linemen wearing safety hats. For those not showing safety hats the author apologizes, for the protective hat is a must in the lineman's and cableman's attire."

Some of the photos in this book no doubt date to the 1930s.

"Aluminum Company of America" has been "Alcoa" since before I was born. So that picture must indeed be quite old.

The reason those guys wore the felt hats back them actually was for safety (kind of). They could feel if the wire touched the hat instead of having the wire touch their head.
