I found this in a detached one-car garage. This is two covers that have been caulked (not glued) together. Better yet, there were three six-foot, daisy-chained #18 extension cords, connected together, one end plugged into this receptacle and the other end supplying power to a 1/2 horsepower garage door opener. It brought a smile and a frown to my face all within a two second time frame!

Points for ingenuity = +20
Points for GFCI in a garage = +25
Points for idiocy (ignorance?) = -40

Hey, it's not like the garage door opener is a constant load or anything, right?

Given what we've seen here (Hi Randy [Linked Image]), I'd call it a draw.

Yeah, you dont need that pesky ground feature either then! [Linked Image] [Linked Image]

I've got a thread someplace around here with a "custom" faceplate job like this... Although the one I saw would actually be kinda on the rare side if you could get it at all... (triplex despard & duplex recept, 2 gang) The GFI/toggle switch plate can be found at any Home Depot... As for the garage door opener, I've seen it all! [Linked Image] I've even caught a certain nationwide department store chain installing the openers & then supplying extension cords for them! [Linked Image] More than one H.O. has gotten reimbursed for installing the proper wiring & outlet for these. [Linked Image]

Doug: You're actually right on the dollar; the opener is THE only load in this garage, so that's one positive thing going for 'em!

Randy: You definitely got the record of posting the most wacky installs! I'm just trying to keep up with ya! [Linked Image]

LOL... I wish someone would keep up! I'm starting to feel like somethings wrong with me! [Linked Image] [Linked Image] This is definitely something I wouldn't be suprised by around here [Linked Image]

Randy, its the Service work... Most of us see one job every day for months. You might hit five jobs a day, and they only call you if it's NOT working.... You also (it sounds like) cover LA to SD, and parts east. Man, that's a huge area. That's millions of bad HO installs waiting for you.

The odds are against you. You see more in more places than most of us. Wear it like a badge of honor..... At least someones trying to keep up!

How 'bout those "sectional" or "modular" coverplates I see at the Home Depot??

You can make any configuration, as-many-gang plate as you want from them.

They look like absolute crap when they're done. [Linked Image]

I've used them as temporaries while waiting for special order plates.

This picture isn't much worse IMO. At least it's out in the garage
