Before you all just say "YES", give me a second.. [Linked Image]
I was asked to put in some task lighting at a large office. The fixtures are cable hung 4 lamp units with parabolic lenses. They're being installed with "950" series lamps that have a very high color index (CRI) for "true" colors.

Anyhow, I was stopped and asked if we could use a more "asthetically pleasing" fixture, like the galvanized tin ones they've already got (that I wouldn't put in a dog house).

Do you like this "Stylish style" of office?

To me it just looks like Dr. Seuss never finished his job, and what's more, they probably paid extra to have it done this way.
(Oh, and BTW, the gal that confronted me had a hairdo that looked like somebody turned a pack of coyotes loose after a rabbit on her head) [Linked Image]

***Disclaimer*** No offense intended. Bad taste? Can't really tell with this little amount of info. Closed minded, not open to others ideas or sense of design? Maybe. I think this looks great. You were looking for an honest answer right?

it looks kind of dark for a firm that works with blue prints all day. I wonder how many of the employees have strong eyeglass presciptions.

Scott,
Sure I want an honest opinion!
I know darn well that I'm an old curmudgeon, and I'm not always receptive to new ideas.

In a way, I agree with e-manscott, I think it looks OK, but I would like to see an fc on the area, it appears dark to me also. I tend to have this argument a lot about dark areas though, MAY have something to do with my thick bi-focals. [Linked Image]

And THAT is why I don't post my picture here!!!!! [Linked Image]

Personally I like seeing the mechanical in many spaces. In my latest office I had them not install the drop ceiling because the electricians' pipework was a work of art. I have added some LED based color changing light fixtures and I can change the mood of the room instantly. Depending on the space I really like no ceiling. Meeting rooms, yeah sure; open drafting floors, nah.

Scott,
This wouldn't happen to be in the City of Commerce would it? It looks awful familiar.

I don't mind the style of the office, I think the look can be very cool if done in the right place. From the pics though, I can't tell if I would consider this the right place. I'd have to stand there to make up my mind if the look fits what they're going for, or if they are trying to cram a trendy look for the wrong application. From what I can see in the pics, I wouldn't be suprised if I walked out of there thinking "nice try guys".

I'm wondering if those indirect uplights would prefer to have a white ceiling above them to reflect those lumens back down. Again, I think I'd have to be there.

Hey, next time your there, Electure, see if you can sneak a picture of that hairdo.

That's what I hate about lighting jobs- what I choose you may not like. It's really important to get the customer involved in not only selecting the fixtures, but in identifying what his goals/needs are.

This is a good example of 'lighting confusion.' The parabolics are great where there are concerns about glare bouncing off monitors- but while they deliver loads of light to the desktops, the room often has a "cave-like" ambiance.

Bob, that's the guy!!
I did a job where the AC contractor's son was working as foreman. Although he was pretty knowledgeable, I just couldn't look him in the face without laughing [Linked Image]
He put some kind of grey mousse on his green hair a couple of times, and it looked like he'd been at the beach...under a flock of seagulls & pelicans.

If "new tech" looks good, then so should this sconce, hung above a piece of art that appears (to me) to be ripped up painter's rags glued to a piece of cardboard.

It kind of reminds me of the story "The Emperor's New Clothes". ("But it's just a piece of tin")

It looks like someone subdivided a factory floor and turned it into office space.

Can you imagine how ugly that's going to look in a few years when you get clumps ofdust and dirt hanging from all those pipes and girders?

Nasty. That's the whole reason behind putting drop ceilings in the first place.

Actually, is it just me or are they slowly installing the drop ceiling panels? I see the metal strips have already been placed and the edge of the ceiling in another picture.
