This is a schematic from a popular hot tub sold here.

The point of interest here is that it is showing #8's from a 50A source.

Don't worry, thats only if it's less than 100 feet..lol

I've seen ranges wired with #8 and 50 amp protection.. Isn't there some kind of exception in that situation?

Is the hot tub equipment and breaker listed for 75°C? If so #8 is fine.

Outside installs call for a most installs to go from rx to pvc.

My thought here was that every piece in the chain would need comply to 167 deg F, including bugs, splicing tape,etc...

This becomes a chore to verify.....

My other quiery here is part 4 ( Spas & Hot Tubs) of 680 asking for compliance to parts 1 & 2 of the article, and 680.26's bonding issue w/#8.

As i see it the #8 green applies on the exterior, please correct me if i'm wrong

steve....i agree with avery one else .that # 8 is good for 40 amps.higher for derating per code. but does the hot tub have a motor or two.

yes lighthouse,
the instructions are generic to a number of models, so some may have more than a single motor.

the high draw, at least outside, is the heater...

sparky...ok...this is the way i see it.and if i am wrong please tell me.

the above drawing is correct, since there is a motor involve, the calculations fall under motors an other loads.and here what i came up with.a 1 hp motor 230 volts at 8 amps.x 250%= 20 amps (the 20 amp cb)and (the 30 amp cb )is for the heater.the number # 8 wires feeder= the largest motor 1 hp,fla.8 amps plus 25%, plus all other loads 30 amps heater for a total of 40 amps.and for the 50 breaker, take the largest motor overcurrent device 20 amps plus all other loads 30 amps heater for a total of 50 amps.

lighthouse,
i think you nailed it, the whole assembly is predetermined per 430.24, kudos! [Linked Image]
