While reading an old thread about unprotected SE I thought of this installation. Obviously, it would be better to have this protected, but is this a violation? Are there options for protection that don't involve re-installing in conduit?

That would not likely be a violation in my area.
The inspector could say it is 'subject to physical damage' and require protection however that would be unusual in this area.
Most inspectors in this area do not automatically assume it will be damaged just by the fact it is within reach.
We have long history with cable in this area with little problems.
Other areas of the country do not allow unprotected cable at all below 7' or 8'.

10min after I sent that, I found 230.50(A)
I can see if this were out of the way of foot traffic, but this is the only path to the back of the house from the front (the other side looks like a jungle).
Would there be a "convenient" way to protect this without disconnecting and running through conduit?
