I walked from the bottom to the top of this famous street last year!

Anyone here ever worked along this famous street in San Francisco?

I took some pictures of a new house being built, and they used "greenfield" FMC to wire it up.

Is Romex banned here too?

What edition of the NEC is used in San Francisco?

San Francisco uses the 2001 California Electric Code which is the 1999 NEC. (The entire state is required to adopt this code.) They do have a lot of amendments. The only amendment under Non metallic sheathed cable is to ban it from all non residential occupancies. I just breezed through but I did notice a couple of interesting things. One of the amendments is to require electric room doors to open out and have panic hardware. Right out of the 2002 code. Another is it makes it very clear that the work space area in front of equipment must be level. I believe this was a topic here a wile back.

Oh, I almost forgot! Another amendment is a color code for ungrounded conductors. 208/120 A black, B red, C blue
480/277 A brown, B orange, C yellow

I am located about 50 miles from San Francisco but have never done any work in the city. I have heard they have some interesting amendments but haven't had a chance to see them until now. Thanks Nick! There are some local communities that require all wiring to be in raceways but since SF isn't on of them I'm not sure why they house you saw was being done this way.

I listed a few of the amendments below.

215-8. Means of Identifying Conductor with Higher Voltage to Ground. On a four-wire, delta-connected secondary where the midpoint of one phase winding is grounded to supply lighting and similar loads, the phase conductor having the higher voltage to ground shall be identified by an outer finish that is purple in color or by tagging or other effective means.

347-2 Rigid Nonmetallic Conduit can not be used where exposed.

351-23 Liquidtight Flexible Nonmetallic Conduit can not be used for circuits exceeding 50 volts.

339-3 Type UF Cable can not be used for circuits exceeding 50 volts.

I support this and sent in a Proposal again for the 2005 NEC that was rejected again. I will post the code panel comments here when I receive the ROP actions and hope others will support this as well.

Well I do know Romex is not allowed in Beverly Hills or Burbank CA. Now these are both self incorporated cities even though most people think they are within Los ANgeles.
