The code says you can't. People do it all the time with 1 PH loads on 3 wire teck cable. The blue gets taped white. I have never heard of anybody getting a rejection on this.

I must admit I have done it in a pinch. I did tape 100% of the wire where it was exposed.

When we run ac90 or tech thats smaller than #8 they will allow us to paint or use a magic marker to color the wire where it's visible.Inspection seems to hate the use of tape in this instance.I know of certain people that will purchase colored heat shrink.Not me of course!I don't understand the problem with taping #6 though?

Its because often enough people do not know how to stretch and apply tape properly so that it stays in place without un-winding on smaller wire.

I like the idea of paint, of course there will be inspectors that insist that you prove that the paint is approved and acceptable for use on wire.
