I recently agreed to upgrade an existing Cat5 network to a certified Cat6 network including a new cabinet and patch panel. It's done but it took me way too long for various reasons. It's been a long time since I did a network. It was a per hr. job, but that wouldn't be fair to the customer now. I'm trying to find the average rate per certified drop, so I can calculate a fair billing. What do you charge per drop? I was recently told that $200 is the norm.

There are far too few details given.
Is it all in conduit, wiremold?
Are you dealing with a 200 year old NYC building ?
Is it newer construction?
Did you include a pathway system ?
If so what kind of pathway system ?
What quality of cable and hardware did you use ?
Does this include all the configuration of routers and switches?
Were all the runs at maximum length or were they all 50' runs ?
How many cables are we talking here?
Were they all single location or quad drops ?
How did you certify the job ?
Any pics of this project ?

Sorry I didn't realize all the variables.

Is it all in conduit, wiremold? NO
Are you dealing with a 200 year old NYC building ? NO
Is it newer construction? 15 YEARS
Did you include a pathway system ? NO
If so what kind of pathway system ? NO
What quality of cable and hardware did you use ? BELDEN CAT6 - PANDUIT PATCH AND RJ-45
Does this include all the configuration of routers and switches? NO, JUST CABLE, CABINET, PATCH PANEL, AND TERMINATE EACH END.
Were all the runs at maximum length or were they all 50' runs ? 50' TO 90'AVG.
How many cables are we talking here? 24
Were they all single location or quad drops ? SINGLE
How did you certify the job ? BORROWED A FLUKE CERTIFIER (man that thing is intense!)
Any pics of this project ? NO. IMAGINE A DOCTORS OFFICE WITH A DROPPED CEILING. HAD TO DO IT AFTER HOURS.

THE THING THAT TOOK SO LONG WAS THAT THE TRUSSES WERE 8' ABOVE THE GRID, AND THERE WAS ROMEX ALL OVER THE PLACE SECURED TO TIE WIRE A FEW INCHES ABOVE THE GRID. STEEL STUD WALLS. WE PUT THE CABLE UP ON THE TRUSSES TO GET IT AWAY FROM ALL THAT ROMEX, AND LAY IN LIGHTS.

Romex above a commercial hung ceiling? OUCH!

Anyway, as to what to charge you already know what the costs are. If you can honestly say that you utilized the hours you spent on the job what's the problem? There is a lot going on here, certification, high trusses and did you remove the old stuff?
