How do guys charge for remodel jobs in homes. Since they are sometimes hard to estimate, I just charge by the hour. Usually $40 or $45 an hour and around $20 for a helper. Any other ways to charge?

With experience comes knowledge. For remodel jobs (which I do lots of) I ususally ballpark it a little higher than what I think it will cost. I doo the work t&m billed at $78.00 plus materials marked up 30% (percentage subject to change according to customers attitude, job conditions etc). Most times the actual charge will come in right at or slightly below the estimate. Customers love to hear the job will be less than expected.

since remodel work is main line of bussiness I just charge a flat rate for each different job. for remodeling we place our flat rate at 80.00 an hour so if things go way wrong we will hopefuly still break out allright.

we did have one that went every way wrong bid the job at 3.5 hours plus materials. ended up taking 8.5 becxause once we got the wall and boxes open we found alot of code violations and other just bad stuff. the customer was allright when we explained and showed him what we ran in to so we were lucky to re charge we charged the whole thing at 7.0 hours

when all was said and done we still made out nicely and the customer has refered us for our open and direct manner
