Would I be required to install a 15 or 20 ampere 125v. receptacle in a detached building (not a garage) at a residence? Or, could this be an option? All the contractor installed was a luminaire.

The light in a detached utility building is a luxury, not a requirement, nor is a receptacle.
As a design issue I can't imagine bringing 120v out to a utility building for a light and not putting in a receptacle but I am not sure how you can require it.

George Little...the code does specifically state "detached garages" under 210.52(G)

I'm with gfretwell on this one, no the receptacle outlet is not required.

Still....Glad it's not a code requirement.

210.52(G) requires a receptacle outlet, if the detached garage has power.
