Does anyone know if a copy of the code book/s are/is on CD or in PDF Format. I carry a handheld and would like to have the code on it.

IIRC, the NFPA offers a Code on CD, but I'm not sure of the format.

It comes as "Folio Views" and as PDF on the same disk.

The Folio Views include the handbook and are easy to navigate.

The PDFs are just the code exactly as it appears in the paper version.

You must keep the CD-ROM in the drive to use Folio Views.

Might be a little too big a file for a palm device or the like..... In pdf 4,500kb for 2002, 5,200kb for '99.

The handbook 37,000!

You'd eat up a bit of memory.... you'd need a card just for it.

Laptop no problem.

Personally, I like the Handbook version... htt p://www.nfpa.org/catalog/prod...ink%5Ftype=cross%5Fsell&src=catalog#

I don't have to... It gives you an option on install full or partial, or something like that, but you can install Folio Veiws with it, and not have to have the disck in.

Speaking of Folio Views, wish it were easier to export the pictures in it. It's good for seaching, and printing, but have a hard time e-mailing or say posting some of the pictures in a jpg format.

This seems to be a problem with, or a change to the CD-ROMs.

The majority of people that responded on another thread about this stated like myself that they could not do the 'full install', you are only the second person that I know that has managed to do it. [Linked Image]

One person (a inspector that wanted it on his desk PC and Laptop) also responded that installing the program on two machines was against the licensing agreement. [Linked Image]

As far as posting pictures I agree, I have to cut and paste to 'Paint' then save as a jpg.

All that aside I really like having the NEC on disk along with my book.

That was pretty frustrating when I found that out. As Bob was saying, I wanted a copy on both of my computers. I wanted on my desktop for when I create teaching materials and on my laptop for when I teach. Not only could I not do it due to some sort of protection on the disk, but, as Bob stated, I found out that it is unlawful to do that with a single user license [Linked Image]

I take it that the draft PDF that's online as a free download isn't going to be updated to reflect the final 2005 Code?

I suppose that depends on how far that Texas (?) lawsuit goes, now doesn't it? [Linked Image]

(that's the case that stated if a printed document (the Code) is adopted as local law, it must be made available free of charge - big questions for copyright and publication $$)

For what it is worth, I have a copy of the handbook on my laptop and have had no problem with it working without the CD-ROM. The Folio Views work well as a stand alone copy. [Linked Image]

Doug, I like the sounds of that lawsuit. I have real a problem with the concept of "ignorance of the law is no excuse" being combined with "you have to pay through the nose to a private company to find out what that law is."

Right now without the lawsuit any place that uses the NEC has a free copy for you to look at and it is available at local library's.

Think of the general laws for your area, you can access them for free but you will not be given a free set of law books.

SolarPowered what private company are you paying through the nose to. The NFPA is an organization that is funded by the sale of code books and the like.

The code comes out every 3 years, that is about 780 workdays. If the book cost $70.00 that is $0.09 per work day for a tool of the well paying trade we have chosen.

As for multiple computers and users, apparently, although I can't find it, there is a "Network License" for that purpose. (Its reffered to in the license aggreement)Who knows how much that will run you?

A Code that is developed by a lot of people and administered by and organization can not continue to be revised to keep up with industry without the income to do the revising and supporting the staff. The only way it could work is to allow the government to do the work instead of using a consensus process. HMMMM . . . good idea. [Linked Image]

Does the license agreement state "single user" or "single computer". A "single user" license is just that, a single user. If you have 2 computers for your own use than you are still the only (single) user of the program even though it resides on both of your PCs.

Ian, Unfortunatley yes.... single computer!

Well, if you want to follow the letter of the law or, more technically, the end user license agreement (which may or may not have the force of law), simply do the install that requires the CD to be present. Without the CD, the program is not "installed" and you could shuffle your CD between several computers.
Posted By: gfretwell Re: Code book on CD - 08/24/04 03:55 PM
As far as I am concerned, if there is only one "user" who cares how many copies are installed on different computers.
I have my handbook installed on a couple computers but there is only one in use at any given time and I sleep just fine.
If you own a company with 5 employees using the software, you should have 5 licensed copies. I doubt any reasonable person would dissagree.

Well, while I support the NFPA (I am a FF, after all [Linked Image] ), couldn't a way around the "single machine" license be to install the CD version into the "shared files" folder on the "host" computer for your Palm/PPC? If it's like mine, it should automatically upload to your mobile device with Activesync- I'd make sure to have a BIG memory device installed.

As long as you're not re-distributing it, and it's for your own use only...
