This is a 200a 1ph. UG residential service.

No metallic water lines, interior or exterior. Meterbase is back to back with a 200a main brkr. panel. Short pvc nipple between them. # 4 solid copper from lug in MB down to 2 ground rods 6' apart.

No Ahj here. Homeowner hired a retired elec inspector to look at job and he says the #4 must come from the panel.

Can anyone give me a code art.for this?

Hello Russell, It sounds as though this retired inspector is from an area that is not used to seeing this connection at the meter.

Hi Roger.

Thats what I thought. I don't see the difference in this situation.

Russell,

The connection to a ground rod doesn't need anything larger than #6 Copper. Nothing wrong with the #4 of course. [Linked Image]

You're right CT. It's just a habit. [Linked Image]

Here in Washington, the meter base is not considered to be accessible to the occupant. Technically, the power company says you need to call and coordinate cutting the seal, there its not really accessible. Therefore, the GEC can not be run from there.

This is a AHJ call, and not an NEC code rule except for a strict interpretation of 250.68 which says the GEC must be accessible.
