Mornin everybody,

Quick question,

We are rearranging our machine shop, to cram still more stuff in it.

I know the book says that you need 3 feet of clearance from the front of electrical panels.

But is there any requirement, other than "protection from physical damage" to provide for a wall or other sort of divider between a machine and the electrical stuff.

In other words, can the machinist have his butt up against the transformer case, but the machine still be the required 3 feet?

The code is a minimum standard, if the machinist promises not to store anything on top of the transformer, and will allow it to cool properly by maintaining the clearance of the openings, I guess he could push his butt up against it on occassion. Sounds a little dangerous to me, though.

The top of a transformer is way too tempting a place for people to put tool boxes and such atop of. Hopefully nothing flammable like cutting oils or paper. Also it might happen that metal shavings might get inside and short out something.
