I have long heard the argument about solid or stranded #8 bonding jumpers being used to satisfy 680.74

I ran into this the other day:




This is a 1/0 for a hydromassage tub!!! The installer was upset with me for requiring a 1/0 to bond his service lateral conduit, so he decided to bond everything with 1/0.

Joe: The service entrance conductors are rated for 400 amps. 250.102 (C) refers one to 250.66 for bonding jumpers installed on the line side of the service disonnecting means.

So, what's the answer to stranded or solid? With the wording "not smaller than a No. 8 solid", is the code describing the actual diameter of the conductor, with a stranded being larger than a solid of the same gage?

I read that as 8 Ga solid or a larger stranded size. The only place I know of that allows stranded 8ga for pool bonding is the bond wire in the PVC raceway to a wet niche forming shell. You can use stranded for equipment grounding (not the same thing).

As written, I beleive you could use #8 stranded, but I'm not sure that that is the intent.

Compare the language of 680.74 to that of 680.26

I agree 680.26(C) does say "solid copper conductor". I also see that they call the 8ga in the PVC to the forming shell an EGC, not a bond 680.23(B)(2)(b)
I guess there is method to the madness.
