I need a little help reguarding the 6 ft rule on gfi protection. I am purchasing a house built in 1990 and none of the outlets in the house are gfi protected. I noticed this on a walk through inspection and it was written up on a home inspection report as well. The current owners refuse to install the necessary gfi protection stating that it was the local building departments fault because the home passed inspection at the time it was built.

I am trying to verify when this rule was adopted into the code. The earliest code book I have is the 1996. Does anyone have a copy of the 1987 book?

Thanks

210-8(a) in the 1987 NEC required GFCI protection for kitchen countertop receptacles within 6 ft of the sink as well as Basements, Garages, Bathrooms and Outside.

And in the 1984 NEC it was required in Bathrooms, Garages and Outside.

Thanks Bill.

I verified it as far back as 1978 on the bathrooms, garages, and outside recepts. I just needed to find out what year it was required within 6 ft of the sink. I thought it was 1987 but couldn't prove it. This clears things up a bit.

Sorry I posted the question in the general discussion area first.

1 demerit so far ....
just kidding. [Linked Image]

So, I guess you have confirmed that the 1987 NEC is what was used at the time? Just curious as I know some areas are slow to adopt sometimes. But that would only affect Kitchens and Basements, no excuse for the rest of the house.
