Ok guys need your thoughts and input

Hottub located on a slab outside.

Disconnect is located 5'6" from inside wall of tub.
Tub is protected with a 50A GFI.

Utility has come in and installed a glass meter in a nema3 socket. on top of the disconnect. This was done for customer rebate issues in reference to consumpition of hottub.

Anyway they wired the meter circut on the load side of the breaker.

Over time and during sleet the breaker tripped and caused freeze damage to the tub. After ohming everything out we found leakage between L1 and N and L2 and N. in the meter circuit.

When asked why there wiremen did this, there response was the 10' rule that everything needs to be protected by GFI.

Whats your thoughts, I for one think that meter should be on the line side. This is just asking for trouble, to do otherwise

And do they have a leg to stand on. No where do I see in 680-10 or anything that deals with meter sockets in 680. I feel as long as its 5'+ away were fine
Any thoughts

Ken

Does the unit have integral gfci protection for all its electrical parts already? If so, then your maintenance disconnect doesn't need to be a gfci type.--680.44

Elzapper,

No the hottub does not have a intergal gfi.

The maintance disconnect houses the gfi breaker.

Well then, it sounds like you are in the right, Ken.

Sounds as if the utility has confused "spa" with "swimming pool."
