I am refering to the 1996 NEC Handbook, on page 255 article 318-11 the book has a diagram 318-3 shows a one cable distance between each cable. I cannot find a code reference that says you shall maintain one cable width between each cable. What I have is MC cable with 4 5ookcmil conductors. Is there a mandatory spacing requirement, and if so what is the code reference. Thanks Joe

I dont have my 96 with me but in the 99NEC 318-11 the spacing is allowed for ampacity reasons(derating)

The spacing configuration you refer to permits ampacities in accordance with Table B.103.3 in Annex B of the '02 code.
Otherwise, 392.9 refers to tray fill based on cable sizes.

FYI - There is a website with application answers, sponsored by cabletray manufacturers - http://www.cabletrays.com/
