What code in NEC covers adding a generator receptical to a pump control panel, where the main power source is from the pole (the generator is backup)? Does the generator need a transfer switch to prevent accidental shorting to the pole power per the code?

Try Article 702 Optional Standby Systems. You will need some type of transfer equipment.

Also, every electric utility that I've ever dealt with has a requirement regarding this. It would be best if you checked with them to see what their requirements are.

The cheapest way out is to connect the pump controller to the service by cord and plug. This will allow you to just plug it into the cord from the generator.

all cases say that you should have a double pole double throw switch or an automatic transfer switch. this is to protect power line personel from back feed. which you most likely well be held accountable for. again check with the power supplier.ERWIN
