What edition of the Code is your locality currently using? Does your state have any interesting ammendments? I know how stringent the Code is in Massachusetts.

I read on other posts that California is still using the 1996 Code. Why are they so far behind? (Anyone from CA want to answer this?)

Ill start this one: RI and CT are using the 1999 Code, and the 2002 probably wont get adopted for another year at least.

Oregon is using '99. Won't complete amendments to 2002 'til next spring.

Michigan is using the the 1999 minus 210-12
Michigan has also amended the code in a number of places such as Art 336. Non metallic sheathed cable is permitted in buildings over 3 stories in height.
I do not expect Michigan to adopt the 2002 much before January of 2003

re: 1996

I believe this is the correct answer or pretty close to it ...CA 'bundles' it's codes (plumbing, mechanical, bldg. and elect) and have been using the 'Uniform' codes (1 yr. out of sync with NEC...'U' codes are '97, 2000)...it takes about 1 yr. of political wrangling to adopt the code (another yr. out of sync)...so the '99 would not normally go into affect until 2001 anyway....however there has been a big fight going on in the west between the 'I' codes (International) and the 'U' codes....there is a LOT of money donated every yr. to the state politicians by the 'U' people (read unions)...so there is a strong vested interest to keep the 'U' codes....so this intense 'I' code, 'U' code wrangling has delayed the adoption of any code since the 1997 'U' codes...thus no update on the NEC. dana-
Ahhhh....I see. Sounds like a bunch of political mumbo jumbo going on.

The reason I was curious about California is because my friends have a new house (built in '98) and their bathrooms are on one 15 amp circuit (with the GFI in the garage!) and there are no grounds on any of the switches. In fact, they didnt start putting dedicated 20 amp circuits in the bathrooms until late 2000.

CT,

Last I heard NY is still oficially on the 1996 NEC. I don't know of any Amendments offhand. The inspectors will be looking for AFCIs though, but as per the '99 it seems.
