hi,
romex connectors are in my opinon not watertight. given a UF cable exposed in a wet location and terminated in an FS box, what is the appropriate connector?

i dont think a romex connector is listed for this purpose.

i cant remember ever seeing a watertight romex connector other than SEC connectors.

i have seen CGB'S, flex connectors with RTV, and a few other variations but nothing UL listed that i can remember...(my memory is getting really bad)

any replies are appreciated.

-regards

Several manufacturers make connectors for UF cable. They may be hard to find at the wholesale house because they so rarely sold. Also, most folks don't care to pay the price for them.

Arlington Industires is one manufacturer that I know of. I don't have a web address for them, (800) 233-4717

You are probably correct in thinking that a standard Romex connector is not Ok in a wet location. The UL White books says they can be used with UF cable in dry locations unless otherwise indicated on the carton.

From the 2002 UL Directory:

GENERAL — Connectors "Listed" for use with nonmetallic sheathed cable are also suitable for use with multi-conductor underground feeder and branch circuit cable where used in "dry locations" unless otherwise indicated on the carton.

See the Definition of Location in Article 100:

My local Home Depot has WP UF connectors in 1/2 & 3/4 size.

Here's what I use for SOW:

CHNCGB195 CORD CONNECTOR for 1/2" KO, .5" to .625" diam. cable Water Proof $4.84
CHNCGB295 CORD CONNECTOR for 3/4" KO, .5" to .625" diam. cable Water Proof $4.84

The ones sized for 12-2-G UF are similar in price, but I must've not recorded the info on them...

Thomas & Betts make 'em. Last I remember, T&B 3115 is good for 12/2 UF.

I've got 3115's listed as flex connectors...?!?!?

Maybe that's why I couldn't find 'em...

3115's are 3/4" and 3112's are 1/2" flex according to my (ahem) <sarcasm> flawless </sarcasm> accounting and recording...

I've got 'em priced at $2.00 too... Something's fishy here...

Sparky, I said "last I remember" ya know how long it's been since I've been in business ?
However, I did catch a contractor about to use regular romex connectors in a damp location, he did not get to [Linked Image] , but the connectors he bought were T&B again, not SURE of the number.

Hmmm... OK, I'm thinkin' 2116 for some reason...

Yep, confirmed, T&B 2116 for 1/2" trade size and a UF shaped gasket, about $5...
